P. S. Burton
Untitled 5

I was seven and I set my clock
Christmas to wake up before
anyone else. The clock wasn't as
loud as I thought it was going to
be, yet I still woke up. It was five
in the morning. I ran softly down the
stairs I got to the first landing and
I looked out of the window, being that I was
short I had to stand one my toes. The snow was
untouched, white, clean and it came down
perfectly the fertile farm soil of my
Grandpa's farm. I love the snow on the farm
it's beautiful pared to the snow in the
city coming down so fast and busy when it
hits the ground it's already dirty.

I crept down the remaining steps. I went
on all fours to the tree. excited to see that
Santa come all the way out here to give
me my gifts. I went through all the present
with my name on it. I ripped and pulled all
presents like a great thunder and Red and Green
wrapping into the air and came down
like the snow outside softly with out a sound
and in all this I hear a voice a whisper.
"John" my fathers name
My grandpa was laying on the couch the whole time
sleep and I guess I woke him up. with ol'mutt
by his side like always. "John is that you" I said
"yes" in a low tone to mimic my father...everyone
calls me John anyway I'm the spitting image of my father and
he is the spitting image of his father.

I walked quickly but silently to my
grandpa and gave him a hug and whisper
his ear "it's beautiful outside"
his hair was a lot grayer and his eyes
were almost invisible. he told me to
reach into his pocket and get his wallet
I did as i was told. inside the first flap
I found what he was looking for a rusted old
washer. he told me that this washer was lucky
he found it when he was seven in Kingston and he
has had it ever since. he told me to keep and to
not tell anyone about it and he went back to sleep
I went back to opening my presents again.
My father soon came down the steps. to see
was going on down here. I saw him and gave
him a big hug and told him that "it's
beautiful outside" he put me down and went over to
the couch and shew'd ol'mutty from grandpa and I went back
to my presents. my father touched my grandpa arm to
wake him up, but I told my dad that he was sleeping
and not to wake him. My father called out "Dad" and nothing
happened my grandpa never moved. my father grapped my hand and
told me to go upstairs that I wouldn't understand

Three days later, I was in a church surrounded by
tears yet I couldn't. I didn't know what was
happening I tried to ask questions but all I could get was tears
did grandpa like being in the box?
Can he breathe in there ?
I tried to tell everyone that he was just sleeping
and that he was playing a joke on everyone
like he doesn't me. He's joking. But there were
just tears My father whispered in my ear that Pa was dead
but I didn't understand death.
I didn't understand the washer and why it was so
important I didn't understand why he gave it to me
I didn't understand why my father was crying.
I didn't understand why it was so ark that day
why it started to rain in the middle of December
the grave of my grandfather. I didn't understand.
